My Favourite Music

This is by no means either a complete or an exhaustive list of my musical tastes. Instead, it's a selection of music, CDs, and groups which I find particularly noteworthy for whatever reason. When possible, I provide links to their own web sites.

Filk:

I have a taste for filk music (the music of the science fiction and fantasy community (for a proper definition of the term, follow the link above)) and, as such, many of the items here (at least to start with) will probably be filk-related.

Ookla the Mok

Ookla the Mok is a filk rock band whom I have followed for some time. They write enjoyable music on quite variety of subjects (although most of them deal with science fiction (especially television and comics) as well as youth culture of the last few decades. Currently, “Less than Art” and “Smell No Evil” are my favourites amongst their offerings. I guess my greatest complaint with Ookla is that their voices are occasionally drowned out a bit by the other instruments in their music (although this is better in their later albums, and their albums in general are better than their early live shows).

FilKONtario CDs

FilKONtario is Canada's only annual filk convention (or, at least, it was the last time I checked). Every year (starting with FilKONtario 8), FilKONtario puts out a CD of some of the more notable moments of the convention. These have been, in my experience, excellent overviews of the best of current filk. The convention itself is also quite a bit of fun.
