Brian York's Life

Back to normal, such as it is

Written on June 19, 2008

Well, things are back to “normal” for me (with respect to the journal at least). Of course, how normal things can be given that I’ve only been writing this thing for the past four days is open to debate. What I mean is that updates are going back to fairly short updates, not very often.

I’m still working on commenting here. Basically, once I’ve

I’ll be ready to add commenting. Meanwhile, since I’m posting on my LJ every time I create a new article here, people can comment there, should they so choose. Which probably means I should link do it. Because I was thinking about my work when I created my account, the id is Dibs_and_Dlas (short for Diffuse Interstellar Bands and Damped Lyman Alpha systems, which happens to be what I was working on at the time).

I think that’s it for the moment. Things in my life other than this are proceeding as well as can be expected. I’m in a fairly good mood, and I have some good reading material (“Primary Inversion” by Catherine Asaro and “Optical Astronomical Spectroscopy” by C R Kitchin), the latter borrowed from my advisor to bring me up to speed on, well, optical astronomical spectroscopy. And Morgan has suggested another book for me to read later on, so I’m unlikely to run out of reading material any time soon. Not to mention that I’ll soon be in Ottawa, with most of my library right at my fingertips.

Speaking of which, I really should add some stuff to my books page (Catherine Asaro Keith Hartmann, maybe others). And my music page (Dandelion Wine). And possibly some others as well. So much to do, so little time. And that’s completely ignoring the issue of my actual work, and the stuff I do around the house. Oh well, I never expected grad school to be a nice easy ride. Speaking of which I wish that the UVic Astronomy department would get their graduate courses online so that I could enroll (those there currently are from last year, and will do me no good at all). Oh well, at least I got paid this week.

Well, it seems as if I’m the only one here who’s having a good day today. Too much bad stuff seems to be either already a part of what’s going on here or just happening at once. What a day. And it isn’t over yet. We’ll see what happens, but things just seem to be out of control at the moment. Well, they are, but we aren’t quite at the end of the world yet. And hopefully we can turn the clock back a bit.

Overall, I had a good day today. Enjoyable work, got some things done that needed doing, and managed to get some reading time in on the bus after dropping off DR at camp. So, as it turns out, fairly good all in all. And, I suppose, that’s all I can ask for.
